🌊 Juan de Fuca Marine Trail

📍 Near Sooke

One of BC's iconic long-distance coastal hikes. The trail runs between China Beach (near Jordan River) and Botanical Beach (Port Renfrew), hugging rugged Pacific coastline the entire way. Do it as a 4-day backpack or pick a single section for a day hike — Botanical Beach (tidal pools) and Bear Beach (secluded cove) are the highlights.

💡 Tip: Do the Botanical Beach section for a spectacular 2h day hike without committing to the full trail. Tidal pools are incredible at low tide.

🏔️ East Sooke Coast Trail

📍 Near Sooke

Called one of the best day hikes in Canada. The trail traverses the rugged south coast of East Sooke Regional Park, hopping between headlands with jaw-dropping Pacific views. Rocky, rooty, and demanding — but the views and solitude are unmatched. Requires a car shuttle (or a long road walk back).

💡 Tip: Start at Aylard Farm (east trailhead) and finish at Pike Road (west). Arrange a car shuttle or taxi — the road route back is too long.

⛰️ Mount Finlayson (Goldstream)

📍 Near Victoria

Victoria's most popular challenging hike. A steep climb through old-growth forest ends at an open rocky summit with 360° views of Saanich Inlet, the Malahat, and on clear days, the Olympic Mountains. Just 20 minutes from downtown Victoria.

🏔️ Strathcona Park – Marble Meadows

📍 Near Campbell River

One of Vancouver Island's finest alpine hikes. The trail climbs steeply from Buttle Lake through old forest to spectacular marble karst meadows with glacier views. Wildflowers in August. Snow patches persist into July. A backcountry gem in Strathcona Provincial Park.

A beautiful rainforest trail in Pacific Rim National Park leading to a secluded beach. Massive western red cedars, boardwalked sections over bog, ending at a gorgeous crescent beach. One of the best short hikes in the Tofino area.

What to Bring

👟 Waterproof hiking boots
Vancouver Island trails can be wet year-round. Waterproof shoes are non-negotiable.
🌧️ Rain layer
Even sunny days can end in a shower. A lightweight shell takes no space.
💧 Water + filter
Most trails have streams — a filter lets you top up without lugging litres.
🐻 Bear spray
Black bears are present throughout the island. Carry spray and know how to use it.
📱 Offline maps
Download AllTrails or Gaia GPS before heading out. Cell coverage is patchy.
🧃 Extra food
Always bring more than you think you need. Trails take longer than expected.
