Coastal rainforests, alpine meadows, dramatic Pacific shorelines — Vancouver Island has some of Canada's most spectacular hiking.
One of BC's iconic long-distance coastal hikes. The trail runs between China Beach (near Jordan River) and Botanical Beach (Port Renfrew), hugging rugged Pacific coastline the entire way. Do it as a 4-day backpack or pick a single section for a day hike — Botanical Beach (tidal pools) and Bear Beach (secluded cove) are the highlights.
Called one of the best day hikes in Canada. The trail traverses the rugged south coast of East Sooke Regional Park, hopping between headlands with jaw-dropping Pacific views. Rocky, rooty, and demanding — but the views and solitude are unmatched. Requires a car shuttle (or a long road walk back).
Victoria's most popular challenging hike. A steep climb through old-growth forest ends at an open rocky summit with 360° views of Saanich Inlet, the Malahat, and on clear days, the Olympic Mountains. Just 20 minutes from downtown Victoria.
One of Vancouver Island's finest alpine hikes. The trail climbs steeply from Buttle Lake through old forest to spectacular marble karst meadows with glacier views. Wildflowers in August. Snow patches persist into July. A backcountry gem in Strathcona Provincial Park.
A beautiful rainforest trail in Pacific Rim National Park leading to a secluded beach. Massive western red cedars, boardwalked sections over bog, ending at a gorgeous crescent beach. One of the best short hikes in the Tofino area.
A gorgeous waterfall hike in Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park, just inland from Parksville. Two dramatic falls and a canyon gorge. Easy enough for kids, beautiful enough for anyone. The swimming hole below the upper falls is a summer favourite.
