Hornby Island Ocean Adventures

Fishing charters for salmon, halibut, ling cod and prawns around Hornby, Denman and Deep Bay, plus sightseeing runs for whales, sea lions and birds. The 26-foot panga also works as a water taxi to Hornby Island — fifteen minutes from Deep Bay, thirty from Comox.

Harbour and wildlife cruises from berth 15 at the Comox Municipal Marina on a boat called Twee Schoenen, shallow enough to nose right into a beach. Two-hour harbour tours, sunset cruises, island excursions, casual fishing and whole-boat private charters all work Baynes Sound and the estuary. The February and March herring spawn tours draw sea lions and big numbers of birds — more than a thousand Pacific loons counted on one trip.

Half- and full-day salmon charters from Port Augusta Street in Comox, on a Transport Canada certified boat. Captain Cliff Moors has fished salt water for more than 25 years and holds SVOP, marine first aid, restricted radio and MED A3 tickets; his two sons are SVOP qualified as well. A catch-and-cook package hands the day's fish to chef Stephanie Noel to put on a plate.

Paddle and sightseeing trips from the Pacific Playgrounds marina at Saratoga Beach, where a support boat can drop paddlers on almost any beach or shoreline — some trips start by helicopter. Fishing charters and yoga tours run as well, and they rent stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and pedal fishing kayaks.
