Getting to Vancouver Island

There is no bridge. Every way onto the island is a ferry or a flight, and which one you take shapes the rest of the trip. Planning your trip can seem daunting, but with this practical guide, you’ll have all the information you need to make your journey to Vancouver Island as seamless as possible.

1. Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay
This is the route to Victoria. The crossing takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes and threads through the Gulf Islands. Swartz Bay is a short drive north of Victoria.

2. Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay
For those heading to Nanaimo, this route is your best bet. The journey spans about 1 hour and 40 minutes, taking you across the Georgia Strait. Nanaimo’s waterfront and restaurants are within walking distance of the harbour, and the rest of the mid-island is up Highway 19 from there.

3. Horseshoe Bay to Langdale
Perfect for visitors interested in the Sunshine Coast, this 40-minute ferry ride offers scenic views and a taste of coastal living. While Langdale itself is on the mainland, it acts as a springboard to the island through additional ferry connections or by exploration of the surrounding areas.

Booking Tips:

• Reserve in Advance: Ferries can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons (summer months and holidays). Reserving your spot online guarantees you a spot on your preferred sailing.

With a Car:
