Before you go

Wednesday November 4 with Dr. Jason Colby Oak Bay Recreation Centre 1975 Bee Street 7:00 – 8:30 pm | doors at 5:30 pm (All Ages) In August 1791, African slaves in the French Caribbean sugar colony of Saint-Domingue rose up against their masters. The resulting revolution was the first in world history to overturn both slavery and colonial rule. Over thirteen years of bloody conflict, the ex-slave rebels defied French and British efforts to crush them, founding the independent republic of Haiti. In the process, they inadvertently contributed to the dominance of the United States in the Western Hemisphere.
