Glamping on Vancouver Island
A bed, a roof and somebody else’s firewood, in places you would otherwise need a tent to reach. The category is loose — here is what is actually behind each word.

What the words mean
Cabin: solid walls, a real bed, usually power and often a kitchenette. The most weatherproof option and the one that works in winter. Yurt: a round framed tent with a solid floor, a stove and no plumbing — warm, characterful, and a walk to the washroom. Dome: a geodesic tent, usually with the best view and the worst insulation.
Treetop and sphere stays are the specialist end: memorable, small, expensive, and booked out a long way ahead. Whatever the name, the questions are the same — is there heat, is there a private bathroom, and how far is the car.
When to go, and what it costs
Summer is the peak and prices reflect it. Spring and autumn are where glamping earns its money on the island: the point of a solid roof and a woodstove is that weather stops mattering, and the shoulder seasons here have both the best light and the lowest rates.
Expect a two-night minimum at weekends, a cleaning fee, and a cancellation policy measured in weeks rather than days. Read it before you book a trip around the weather.
Ask before you book
- Private bathroom or shared?
- The single biggest difference between two listings at the same price. Yurts and domes often share.
- How far from the car?
- Some sites are a hundred metres of boardwalk. That matters at midnight in the rain with a cool box.
- Is heating included?
- A woodstove is a job as well as a feature. Ask whether firewood is provided and who lights it.
- Minimum stays and cancellation
- Two nights at weekends is normal, and cancellation windows are long. Check before you gamble on the forecast.

Who it suits
Glamping works for people who want to wake up somewhere remote without owning any equipment, for anyone who has aged out of sleeping on the ground, and for a first night outdoors with children. It works badly for anyone expecting hotel service — most of these places are small operations where you carry your own bags and make your own coffee.
Check three things before booking: bathroom arrangements, how far you park from the door, and whether heat is included or is a stove you will be feeding yourself.
