The reliable method
Quiet on the island is mostly a function of distance from three or four well-known stops. Drive twenty minutes further, take the second car park rather than the first, and go on a Tuesday. The same shoreline, forest or view with a tenth of the people is nearly always available within half an hour.
Shoulder season does the same work as distance. The most photographed place on Vancouver Island in February is a quiet place.
Small towns are the actual answer
The towns that itineraries skip carry the museums, the bakeries, the harbour walks and the community galleries that the busy towns charge for. They also carry the people who will tell you where to go next, which no list can do.
The town pages linked below are the best entry point: each one lists what we actually hold for that place rather than what a travel article thinks you should see.
How to find your own
- Go twenty minutes further
- The quiet version of almost any famous stop on the island is the next one along the same road.
- Take the second car park
- The first trailhead fills. The second is usually empty and joins the same network.
- Travel midweek, off-season
- A Tuesday in October does more for solitude than any secret location.
- Ask in the town, not online
- Museums, bakeries and visitor centres know the current answer. Forums know last year’s.
