David Turpin Building (DTB) - B255. Environmental Studies Research Colloquium October 28, 11:30-12:30 David Turpin Building, room B255 The School of Environmental Studies presents: 25+ Years of Wild Salmon Research: History and Findings of the Salmon Coast Field Station Caroline Glass Executive Director, Salmon Coast Society Abstract: For over twenty years, a small, off-grid field station reachable only by boat has studied wild salmon in the Broughton Archipelago. Salmon Coast Field Station grew out of a grassroots effort that began in 2000, when Alexandra Morton started asking what the salmon farms crowding her home waters were doing to the wild fish passing through them. This talk traces that history and what 26 years of independent data have shown about the effects of salmon aquaculture on wild salmon, along with how First Nations, scientists, and community members worked together to see farms removed from the region. That story points to broader lessons about the value of long-term datasets, the role NGOs play in ecological monitoring as public monitoring becomes sparser, and what place-based research can show that other approaches cannot. Speaker: Caroline Glass is the Executive Director of Salmon Coast Society, a non-profit based in Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw territory dedicated to supporting innovative science that sustains wild salmon and their ecosystems. Originally from the California coast, Caroline has long been passionate about marine systems. She brings a plethora of experience in conservation resear
