About this event
David Turpin Building (DTB) - B255. Environmental Studies Research Colloquium October 21, 11:30-12:30 David Turpin Building, room B255 The School of Environmental Studies presents: Building Community Resilience through Collective Reflections on Climate Crisis Dr. Breanna Lawrence and Dr. Jeff Smith PhD candidate and Manager of the EcoSoil Lab at the University of Victoria Abstract: Ecological degradation and the climate crisis can be accompanied by profound experiences of loss, including losses of place, species, anticipated futures, and relationships with the natural world. These experiences of loss can take the form of disenfranchised grief: grief that is not always socially recognized, validated, or given space for collective expression. Building Community Resilience through Collective Reflections on Climate Crisis is a community-engaged, arts-based research project exploring how people experience, express, and make meaning of ecological grief. As part of the project, we hosted a series of Climate Grief Cafés, creating arts-based, multisensory spaces for participants to engage with climate emotions through sound, visual art and creative expression, reflection, and conversation. In this presentation and film screening, Breanna Lawrence and Jeff Smith will introduce the research project and then share a series of original short films created by arts-based researchers and musicians, with original musical compositions, drawing on experiences and reflections from the Climate Grief Cafés.
