About this event
Elliott (ELL) 160. “The LMC-perturbed dark matter landscape ” The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) can significantly perturb the Milky Way’s dark matter halo and boost the high-speed tail of the dark matter velocity distribution in the Solar neighborhood. Cosmological simulations provide a powerful tool for studying these effects and assessing their consequences for dark matter searches. I will discuss the impact of the LMC on the local dark matter distribution in state-of-the-art cosmological simulations and present the implications for dark matter direct detection, considering interactions within the non-relativistic effective field theory framework as well as inelastic scattering. Finally, I will discuss how the LMC affects the interpretation of the recent high-energy nuclear recoil event reported by the LZ experiment, across a broad range of dark matter interactions.
