The shape of the year

Summer is dense: outdoor music, food and seafood festivals, fairs, parades and street markets, mostly between late June and early September. Autumn brings harvest, film, cider and writers’ events. Winter is lights, markets and indoor concerts. Spring is smaller and more local — blossom, food and community fairs.

The biggest events on the island sell accommodation out for the surrounding weekend, not just the town. If you are travelling for one, book somewhere to sleep before you book the ticket.

Big festivals and small fairs are different trips

A marquee festival means tickets months ahead, shuttle buses, camping fields and a plan. A small-town fair means parking on the verge, five dollars at the gate and a pie tent, and is frequently the better afternoon.

Both are worth building a weekend around. The difference is how far ahead you have to decide.

Going to one

Book the bed before the ticket
A large festival fills accommodation across the whole area, not just the host town.
It goes ahead in the rain
Outdoor events here rarely cancel for weather. Boots and a shell, not optimism.
Check the payment situation
Many sites are cashless; a few are cash-only. It is on the event page and nowhere else.
Ask about access directly
A field is not a town square. Organisers answer this question well; listings often do not.

Halls, squares and community spaces

Where the smaller events actually happen, town by town.

Practical notes

Outdoor events here proceed in rain, so dress for it rather than hoping. Most sites restrict outside alcohol and have a licensed area instead; many are cashless, and a few are cash-only — check the site’s own page.

Accessibility varies enormously between a paved town square and a field. Where it matters, contact the organiser directly rather than relying on a listing.

Frequently asked questions

What festivals are on right now?
The list on this page is what is coming up next. For the full calendar, see the events index and the weekend page.
When is festival season on Vancouver Island?
Late June to early September is the dense stretch, with outdoor music, food and community events most weekends. Autumn runs harvest, film and writers’ festivals; winter brings light festivals and indoor concerts; spring is smaller and more local.
How far ahead should I book?
For a large summer festival, months — and book accommodation first, because a big event fills the whole area, not just the host town. Small community fairs need nothing but a free Saturday.
Do festivals run in the rain?
Almost always. Outdoor events on the island are planned around the expectation of rain and cancellations for weather are rare. Dress for it, bring boots, and bring a bag for the wet layers.
Are festivals family-friendly?
Community fairs and food festivals overwhelmingly are, often with dedicated children’s programming. Music festivals vary — some are all-ages with family camping, others are licensed and adults-only. The event page states it.
