About this event
Clearihue (CLE) C305 Critical Humanities Commons. The translation of Greek and Latin texts has become a subject of social and mainstream media discourse following the release of Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey. In particular, Emily Wilson’s translation of Homer’s Odyssey has (re)emerged as a lightning rod for controversy. This interactive workshop will offer attendees an opportunity to compare select translations of Homer’s Odyssey and Catullus’ love poems and to consider the following questions: What are the purposes of translation? What factors shape different approaches to translation? How do translators make ancient texts accessible to a modern readership? What makes a translation successful?
